The St. Louis County Attorney’s Office serves residents through criminal prosecution, legal representation of County government, legal work involving children and vulnerable adults, and support for crime victims and witnesses. Our responsibilities are established by Minnesota law.
Our mission
Our mission is to promote the well-being of county citizens through fair and vigorous prosecution of crime; to assist and protect victims and others in need; and to provide timely, sound, and effective legal advice and representation to County Departments and the Board of Commissioners.
How the Office is organized
The Office has three legal divisions:
Criminal Division — Handles criminal prosecutions within the Office’s jurisdiction and juvenile delinquency matters. Victim/Witness staff help people understand the process, access support and participate in a case.
Civil Division — Advises and represents County government in legal matters. Learn more under Legal Services for County Government.
Public Health and Human Services Division — Provides legal services in child protection, child support and paternity, vulnerable-adult matters and civil commitment. Learn more under Family and Protective Services.
County Attorney Kimberly J. Maki
Kimberly J. Maki is the elected St. Louis County Attorney. She leads the Office and oversees its legal and administrative work.
Serving communities across the County
The Office has locations in Duluth, Hibbing and Virginia, including the Duluth Government Services Center. Our attorneys and staff work with County departments, law enforcement, courts and community partners, each with a distinct role in serving the public.
