The Civil Division of the County Attorney’s Office provides legal advice and support to all county departments. Civil Division Attorneys’ duties include giving legal advice, developing department policies with department staff, and drafting documents and other material for county departments.
Civil Division attorneys also represent the county, its departments, and employees in litigation matters. Civil attorneys appear in State District Court, Court of Appeals, and Supreme Court; Workers’ Compensation Court; Tax Court; Federal District Court; and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Types of litigation include tort (negligence) claims, workers’ compensation claims, real property tax appeals, labor law, civil rights, employment law, land use and environmental enforcement, and civil forfeitures arising from criminal matters.
