At around 9:00 AM this morning Deputies were dispatched to a one vehicle rollover on Hwy 21 N just North of Babbitt in unorganized township 61R13. 22 years old Morgan Alexa Heckman was traveling North on Hwy 21 N when she swerved to avoid an animal and her car left the roadway striking a side road embankment. Her car then rolled and struck a tree. She was transported via Babbitt Ambulance to the Ely Hospital where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was later discharged from the hospital.

On Sunday July 30th, 2023 at approximately 02:55 hrs., St. Louis County 911 dispatchers were notified via an automated 911 call stating that an IPhone user had been in a severe crash at the intersection of Vermillion Dr. and 2nd St. SE with in the City of Cook. It appears that the vehicle had been traveling South at a high rate of speed, lost control after going over the railroad crossing, left the roadway, and struck the crossing arm control on the South side of the road / train track crossing. The vehicle ultimately came to rest on its roof in the East ditch of 2nd St. SE. Both parties were transported to the Cook Hospital by ambulance with what is believed to be minor injuries, however the 18 yr old driver from the Nett Lake area is being investigated for criminal vehicular operation and driving while under the influence.

On July 29, 2023 at approximately 7:19PM, emergency personnel were dispatched to an Apple crash detection report. The location was on the Pequaywan Lake Rd, north of Duluth. As units were responding, a motorist called and reported he had come upon a male lying in the ditch from an apparent motorcycle crash. The driver and sole occupant of the motorcycle was a 33 year old Hermantown resident. He was transported to St. Lukes Hospital with life threatening injuries. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.

On July 28, 2023 at 1629 hours the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, US Coast Guard and Lakewood Fire Department responded to McQuade Safe Harbor for a report of a kayaker that the reporting party couldn't see anymore in the waves. A timeline was established from the reporting party last seeing the kayaker about 30 minutes prior as they had left the area and came back and were then unable to see the kayaker and called 911 concerned for the kayaker. At no time did the kayaker appear to be in distress. There were no missing people or unaccounted for vehicles in the parking area. The thorough search was completed. The search was then called off as there were no additional pieces of information or reason to believe the kayaker was ever in distress.

One fatality was reported after emergency responders were dispatched to the area of the Pike Lake Public Access in Canosia Township for a report of a male who had gone under water. The male had been scuba diving with another person near the dock area and was observed going beneath the surface of the water shortly after requesting assistance to the dock. The male was quickly removed from the water within minutes by his diving partner and a nearby witness. Lifesaving efforts began immediately but were ultimately unsuccessful, and the 31-year-old male, dentified as Justin James Cyril Swan from Alberta, Canada was pronounced dead at the scene.
