The Minnesota Department of Revenue provides for two types of refunds.
The first is for homeowners or renters whose property taxes exceed a specified percentage of household income.
The second for homestead properties that meet the following requirements:
- The homesteader lived at the property on January 2 of the current year and the previous year;
- The net property tax on the homestead increased by more than 12 percent; and
- The increase was at least $100.
Current year application forms may be found online, and are due to the Minnesota Department of Revenue by August 15.
If you are filing for the Homeowners Credit Refund, you may also file for free using the Minnesota Department of Revenue's Property Tax Refund Online Filing System.
