Structure of the Sheriff's Office
Due to the size of St. Louis County, the Sheriff's Office has a rather unique structure. Typically the top positions within the sheriff's office are the Sheriff and Undersheriff, sometimes referred to as a Chief Deputy. The Undersheriff in St. Louis County works under the direct authority of the Sheriff and is, in fact, the Sheriff in the absence of the elected Sheriff.
St. Louis County is further defined by having four Supervising Deputies at the next level. The Supervising Deputies are responsible for the day to day function of the 911 Communications Center, Duluth Sheriff's Office, Hibbing Sheriff's Office and Virginia Sheriff's Office.
Administration
