St. Louis County administers several programs to supplement household income and provide food support. The type of assistance people receive depends on their life circumstances, family size and type, and other factors. One application can be used for all cash and food programs, financial workers will determine for which programs you are eligible.

Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP)

The Supplemental Nutrition Program, also known as SNAP or Food Stamps, is a federal program that helps citizens with low income get the food they need.  The program issues electronic food support benefits that can help stretch a household’s food budget. Income and other eligibility criteria, as set by the State and Federal governments, apply.

Emergency Assistance

Emergency assistance is a cash program that helps resolve personal financial crises related to housing, such as evictions, utility shutoffs, and deposit assistance. Income, asset, and other criteria as set by the State and County, apply.

Family Cash Assistance (MFIP/DWP)

Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) and the Diversionary Work Program (DWP) are the Minnesota versions of the federal Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF). These are cash programs for families with children or pregnant women. Both programs include an employment services component. Income, asset, and other eligibility criteria, as set by the State of Minnesota, apply.

General Assistance (GA)

General Assistance provides cash assistance for single adults without children who have a serious illness, disability or other issue that limits their ability to work. Income, asset, and other criteria as set by the state and county, apply.

Housing Support (GRH)

The Housing Support (formerly known as Group Residential Housing) program pays for room and board for seniors and adults with disabilities. Expenses can include rent, utilities, food, household supplies and other necessities. Income, asset, and other criteria as set by the state and county, apply.

Supplemental Assistance (MSA)

Minnesota Supplemental Aid (MSA) is an income supplement for people who receive federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, or who could get SSI if their income was not above the SSI limit. The monthly benefit may also cover special needs payments for people who qualify. Special needs payments may be provided for medically prescribed diets, guardian or conservator fees, some home repairs or replacement of household furniture and appliances, and some high housing costs.
